The Nationals faced off with the Tigers in a three-game set on Tuesday, completing their season-series against each other. The bats were hot for Washington, who ignited for nine runs on seven hits including two home runs. The Gambardella brothers once again split time on the bump in the shutout victory, allowing a combined total of three hits to Detroit. Anthony Zimmerman, who is making the most out of his 30-day contract with Washington, posted a 3-7 performance with a long ball and three RBIs in his brother's place. Anthony Gambardella tacked on two hits, including a home run. For the Tigers, Sean McDonnell recorded two of their three hits as they dropped the first game of the day (Tigers 0, Nationals 9).
Game two wasn't very loud for either club as they manufactured just three hits apiece. Sean McDonnell kept the Nationals bats' fairly quiet but struggled with command issues early on. He struck out three batters through six innings and allowed three earned runs. McDonnell produced another two hits but that was just about the only offense from Detroit. Bobby Gambardella tossed five scoreless innings of relief work for the Nationals as they took another game from the struggling Tigers (Nationals 3, Tigers 1).
A two-run home run in the first inning of game three was the only offense the Nationals needed to hold off Detroit once again. That long ball came in the form of Bobby Gambardella, who also tossed a two-hitter in the series finale. Sean McDonnell launched a solo homer over the left field fence for his second of the year but it wasn't enough to earn Detroit their first victory as they fall to 0-6. The Nationals completed the sweep against the Tigers, improving to 8-3 on the season with one game remaining on the schedule against the Rangers (Nationals 2, Tigers 1).
